There are many waterfalls that are two-parts, splitting around an
island. Most of them, however, have one name. The
Cascade and Rushton Falls are two such waterfalls, but carry two
separate names. Located in village of Canton, the Rushton
Falls are actually on the east side of a group of islands and the Cascade
Falls are on the west. In this area, there are several
islands in the Grasse River. The east channel feeds the
Rushton Falls. The Cascade Falls
are actually two part. The west channel feeds part of them
and the east channel splits just above the Rushton Falls and feeds
the other part of the Cascade Falls.
This area is easily found as you enter the village from the
south. Just after the junction of US Rt 11 and NYS Rt 68,
the entrance to a park will be on your left, or the north side of
the road. A local group, known as the Grasse River Heritage
has been formed. This "is a group of Canton citizens
dedicated to working with the Canton community and local, state,
and federal agencies to improve the educational, cultural,
economic, and recreational opportunities in the Grasse River
Corridor." This is according to one of many plaques,
signs and posters in Canton Island Park. The Park has been
constructed with a small parking lot, several educational signs
with pictures, maps and valuable information, a number of benches
to rest as you stroll around the short, very nicely maintained
trail which provides great views of both falls.
The Grasse River flows into the St. Lawrence River in Massena,
in St. Lawrence County.
Note: Depending upon which map or sign you are using,
this river is referred to as both Grasse and Grass.
