to find South Pharaoh Lake Parking. This is on
Pharaoh Road, which is off Beaver Pond Road in the town
of Horicon, Warren County New York.

 This is a relatively remote location and depending upon your
starting point, giving specific directions is probably not the
most effective or efficient approach. That is why we have gone
the GPS route. For those who use AllTrail, this hike is on
AllTrails but please note that they have the parking available
another mile further up the road. That's fine if you have an
off-road vehicle but if you're using the family sedan, plan on
starting the hike at the parking lot noted in the directions
side-bar.
From the South Pharaoh Lake Parking lot, start the hike up
the rough dirt road, Pharaoh Lake Road for 1 mile. At this
point you will cross a marshy area. When we went, they were
in the process of replacing a footbridge. The part of the
bridge that had not been replaced was navigable, but may be
more difficult in high water times.
After crossing
the marsh, continue on the Pharaoh Lake Trail for another
mile (a total of 2 miles from the parking lot) as it
parallels Pharaoh Lake Brook. Once you approach the 2 mile
mark you will hear the water running off to your right.
Just before the trail bends to the left, find a clearing to
the right and head over to the brook, about 40 yards from
the trail. There is no path, it is a bushwhack but nothing
too bad until the final drop down the the stream, which is
short (about 10') but steep. When we went, we ended out a
little too far upstream, so we just worked our way
downstream to the falls. Please note that if you reach the
large footbridge that crosses over Pharaoh Lake Brook, you
went about 100 yards too far. Just turn around and go back
100 years then head over to the brook.
The best place
to photograph the falls is from the opposite side of the
brook from the side the trail is on. We found a good place
to cross about 10 yards beyond the top of the falls. Pharaoh
Lake Brook Falls has three drops for a total of 12' and is
set in a beautiful small gorge filled with moss covered
rocks.
Webmaster's note: Although your drive to
this location, and most of the hike, is in the town of
Horicon, Warren County, note that the actual drop is in the
town of Schroon, Essex County. According to
topographical maps, it is about 800' from the county/town
line.
Pharoah Lake Brook flows southwesterly from this location and
enters Mill Brook. This flows into Schroon Lake in the
hamlet of Adirondack, town of Horicon. Schroon Lake is a
wide spot on the Schroon River which joins the Hudson River just
southwest of Warrensburg. This, in turn, flows to the
Atlantic Ocean in New York City.
