Less that 100 yard upstream from waterfall #16 you will
arrive at a long bridge over Shelving Rock Brook. This
is where Waterfall #17 is. It won't look like much
from the bridge if leaves are on the trees, but it is
about 30' tall with two nice drops toward the top.
I worked my way up the left side of the falls, as you
are looking at it, but it was a little tricky to get
into position to get a decent picture so if you decide
to go up please be careful.
This is the final stop on Shelving Rock Brook. I
continued up the trail another quarter mile and it
leveled off. Looking at maps I would be surprised if
there were any more waterfalls upstream but perhaps I
will check it out on some future outing. I chose to
take the Erebus Mountain Trail all the way back to the
Shelving Rock Mountain Trail and then the Big Bridges
Trail back to my car in parking lot #2, but there are
other options if you want to explore a bit more.
Shelving Rock Brook empties into Lake George. The water
from this then flows through La Chute into Lake Champlain.
The flow then goes north through Canada on the Richelieu River and
empties into the St. Lawrence River.
Please note that the Shelving Rock Brook is
officially named but these tributaries and the falls on them are
unnamed. We have chosen these monikers to simplify the
cataloging of the waterfalls.
