Amsterdam Quadrangle

This is a nice little plunge in downtown Amsterdam, just upstream of the falls at Kirk Douglas Park.  Although not an officially named waterfall, it is listed on the World Waterfall Database, which indicates that it is also known as Ti-o-rand-da.  This database also claims that "Chuctanunda translates to 'where two streams meet'".  However, The old Mohawk-Turnpike Book, found on the Fulton County NYGenWeb states that Chuctanunda is a Mohawk word meaning "stony".  We can only assume that the former comes from a different native language or else it confirms the adage that you can't believe everything you find on the Internet!

The creek runs between old buildings in this section.  our instructions to this waterfall are somewhat vague, but there is a reason.  Many of the streets in this area of downtown Amsterdam are one-way and to someone not familiar with the area, it can be somewhat confusing.  once crossing the Route 30 bridge over the creek, we found our way down some side streets to a parking area at an old industrial site adjacent to the waterfall.  our pictures were downstream of the waterfall.  Two of our contributors have sent in pictures that were taken from next to the cascade on the other side of the creek, so obviously, there are other paths to this location!

The water from the North Chuctanunda Creek makes its way into the Mohawk River and the Hudson River before reaching the Atlantic Ocean in New York City.
