Located on NYS Route 73, this site is just south of the hamlet
of Saint Huberts, which is on the stretch between the village of
Keene Valley and the northern intersection of routes 73 and
9. Contained in the Giant Mountain Wilderness Area, it is a
popular hiking area with a sign identifying the parking lot and
well marked trails. If it weren't for this waterfall, the
Roaring Brook wouldn't be roaring at all, at least for most of the
year. During spring run-off, this waterfall is very
impressive. At about 300 feet, it is still a sight to
behold, but at other times of the year, Babbling Brook would be a
more appropriate name! Depending upon who you reference, the
total drop of Roaring Brook Falls is anywhere from 290 to 325
feet. It basically drops in two steps. The upper drop
encompasses about 2/3 of the total descent with the lower portion
taking up the other 1/3. The upper drop is actually set back
a bit from the remainder of the falls. If you look up from
the bottom you may not even see that section. Stroll
slightly downstream and the entire cascade comes into view.
The Roaring Brook actually flows into Beede Brook which flows
into the East Branch of the Ausable River. Since Beede Brook
does not contain any waterfalls that we know of, we have by-passed
that step in our menu. The East Branch and the West Branch
join forces downstream at Au Sable Forks to form the Ausable
River. This waterfall rich river empties into Lake Champlain
in the town of Peru.
