This is an officially
named stretch of rapids on the Sacandaga River.
This is a new entry and we have not yet been to this location,
but maps indicate that it may be visible from the highway.
NY 30 and NY 8 run together through this region. It is about
mid-way between the intersection of NY 8/NY 30 with Downey Avenue
in Speculator and the area at Christine Falls, about 0.8 mile from
each end. We are continuing to research this.

The Sacandaga River flows through a number of lakes as it makes
its way to the Hudson River whose final destination is the Atlantic
Ocean.
Note: The GNIS data base has a category "Map"
which usually indicates the topographical quadrangle containing
the site. The Rifts is listed as being in Kunjamuk River.
There is no quadrangle named Kunjamuk River. There is a Kunjamuk
River that enters the Sacandaga a little more than 1/2 mile from
this site, but the map coordinates put it on the Sacandaga River
in the Page Mt quadrangle. It is possible that the quadrangle
name has been changed since this was added to the data base.
Another note: The official name of this location is "The
Rifts". For the sake of alphabetizing, we have listed
it as "(The) Rifts" and filed it under "R"!
