Morristown Falls

Directions

NY 37 intersects NY 58 just south of the village of Morristown.  Depending upon your perspective, this is either the beginning or the end of Route 58.  This becomes Main Street as you cross Route 37 and enter the village.  Just under 1/2 mile from this intersection you will pass the end of Mercer Street on your right.  You will see the waterfall on the opposite side of Morristown Bay.

Waterfall videoIt is our understanding that this waterfall is on private property.  Having said that, you can view it from streetside in the village.  If you look across the bay from the end of Mercer Street, you will see it.  Please be aware that the property along the bay side of Main Street are private homes but we have been told that many people routinely take photographs of the falls from the edge of the street.

Your view is from a distance.  The bay is about 250' wide at this point and from your vantage point above the bay, you are about 750' from the waterfall.  However, the view is fairly unobstructed.

When we first learned of this waterfall, we were told that it was ten to twelve feet tall.  After seeing it, we feel that this is a fairly generous estimation.  It appears to be closer to half that height.  Also, due to this location, this stream will obviously be frozen in the winter but we have been told that it flows all summer long.  Contour maps of this area show that the stream is not only relatively small, but it looks to be fed by marshy areas upstream.  It wouldn't be surprising that it would stop flowing during dry periods of the year.

This unnamed stream flows in Morristown Bay on the St. Lawrence River just downstream from this location.
